You may already have some beliefs about the relationship between the mind and the body, especially if you've ever been sick over a dying pet or and IRS Audit.

We not have evidence that mind a body are actually one...  ...two interconnected parts of the same whole.  The mind and the body can not help but affect each other.  Dr. Candance Pert, a molecular biologist formerly at the National Institute of Health and Professor of Molecular and Behavioral Neuroscience at Rutgers University proved through research that ALL cells in the body communicate with each other via “messenger molecules” called peptides. When you’re grieving, one type of peptide messenger will be in your bloodstream and when you’re ecstatic, a different one will be present.  Peptide receptors---which peptides seek out because they are a perfect fit---appear on ALL cells throughout the body. That is why emotions affect every cell in our body, not just those in our heads.  In a phrase, Dr. Pert’s research demonstrated that our minds are in every cell of our bodies.

Holistic health believes that mind, body and spirit form a trilogy. They are all connected and when we get sick we need to remember that they are all connected.  How we can help ourselves get or stay well is an individual path.  There are a variety options available but only you know what will work for you. The combination of modern medical science and ancient healing practices is the most powerful assortment of choices we have ever had at our disposal.  We only need to listen to our own mind- body-spirit and partner with healthcare providers who respect this wisdom and can enhance our healing practice.

Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT)

Einstein showed through physics what ancient healers have taught for thousands of years… everything in the world, including our body, is made of energy.  Just as the proper low of blood throughout the body is vital to our physicalhealth, so is the proper flow of the body’s energy.

The subtle energies that course throughout our body along energy pathways or meridians are the cornerstone of both EFT and acupuncture.  As a result, these two therapies are cousins.

It is believed that all negative emotions are caused by a disruption in the body’s energy system.  As EFT neutralizes these negative emotions, physical symptoms appear to subside.

Using the principles of energy therapy you can optimize your body’s natural capacities to heal itself and to stay healthy. Here is just a partial list of physical ailments which have been safely and naturally addressed by EFT with either partial or complete success.

Hypnosis & Guided Imagery

A picture is worth a thousands words.  Guided imagery is a kind of directed daydream that allows the imagination to help mind and body heal.  This could mean conjuring up images of:

Imagery is not only visual but perceptions that comes through any of the senses….sights, sounds, smells, tastes, and feel.  These sensory images are the true language of the body, the only language it understands immediately and without question.

There are three key principles in understanding how guided Imagery helps.

1. Our bodies don’t really discriminate between sensory images in the mind and what we call reality. Think about reading a recipe. Your mind creates an image of how the food will look, smell and taste and your body responds with extra saliva and stomach rumblings!  Sexual arousal operates the same way. The body is just as enthusiastic about sexual fantasy as reality.

2. In a state of relaxed focus we are capable of more rapid and intense healing, growth, learning and change.  This is the state we are in when we are so engrossed that we lose track of time or don’t hear people talking to us.

3. We feel better about ourselves when we have a sense of mastery or control over what is happening to us.

So, if we (1) introduce images to the mind that the body believes are actual events, (2) in an altered state of mind and (3) when, how and where we want to, we have at our command the unique, powerful and  versatile tool of guided imagery.
